Q&A with Meghan

Meghan Lorine Fashion Blogger

I was lucky enough to host my very own AMA event on their #FashionAMA channel last week! I was asked to speak on my experience in the fashion and entertainment industry and wanted to share a few of my answers to your questions below. Special thanks to all who participated! This was so fun.

What do you believe is the purpose of fashion in society?
In my opinion, fashion is the universal language – spoken by young and old, male and female, rich and poor, experts and amateurs. I grew up shy and really found my voice through my style and the way I dress. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve booked a collaboration just through bonding with a stranger at a fashion show over our mutual love of ever-changing trends in the industry. Especially today, in a world where we are all on different pages when it comes to current events, fashion is the escape – even if just for a brief moment.

Who are some of your favourite designers and what pieces do you currently own from their collections?
Visually, I’m obsessed with everything Gucci, however, when it comes to actually wearing the clothing off the runways, I am always drawn to Marissa Webb’s pieces. They tend to be effortless chic, with the perfect amount of quirk I like to keep within my style. Her Spring 2018 collection was aimed towards the girl on-the-go which really spoke to me! I actually JUST wore one of her dresses to my recent trip to the Keys (you can read more about it here!). I really relate to Nicky Zimmerman as well. Her collections are always so flouncy and feminine with the perfect amount of flair. I currently just splurged on this floral-print linen mini skirt from the Spring 2018 collection. Pricey, but worth it!

What are the travel-trend predictions you have for this year?
I think a lot of people are looking to travel with purpose and focus more of their time towards conservation efforts that make an impact as well as see the world when choosing their travel destinations. In December, I’m planning to volunteer at an elephant sanctuary in Cambodia, which will be an extremely fulfilling experience! Global hotspots such as London will be thriving as well thanks to the royal wedding (is it May 19th yet?!). Miami also seems to be topping the booking lists, which I’d like to think Ryan Murphy’s ACS series on Versace had something to do with that, ha!

In what ways, do you think, mainstream media has to change in order to accommodate the next wave of independent creators?
I love what Bravo does with The Real Housewives “Social Edition” ! The network basically further engages the viewers of the series by encouraging fans to weigh in using social media while they watch. I think, ultimately, it would be cool if they were able to incorporate a “shop while you watch” type element to their cross promotion. I’m also a big fan of podcasts (be sure to subscribe to ‘Commuting in Heels‘ on iTunes!) and think they’ve done a great job with promoting upcoming brands through sponsorship deals. There’s a lot more we can do, but I think we are well on our way!

Do you have a favourite worldwide destination, if so, what is it and what is your ‘must do’ tip for anyone visiting this destination?
I’ve been itching to visit Costa Rica, mainly to see the “Land of the Strays” – a privately funded, volunteer-run organization – that is a no-kill shelter and looks like a (free-range) paradise if you’re a dog lover like me! #AdoptDontShop

What is your greatest weakness and how has it actually helped you achieve your career goals?
Before blogging, my main hobby was professional cheerleading and my very first season I was working out twice a day, dancing three days a week, but had major bloating issues. My stomach was so distended that it felt like my two-piece uniform was cutting the circulation off my waist. Gastroenterologists kept dismissing my pain and symptoms as IBS – one even accused me of being bulimic, but my gut (literally, ha!) told me something else was up. I was finally properly diagnosed with celiac disease – an autoimmune disorder where your body is basically unable to digest gluten aka anything delicious – and while I don’t necessarily look at celiac as a weakness, I’m proud of myself for persevering and not listening to the doctors when they told me my symptoms were all just in my head. I am a different person because of my determination to find a solution.

What strategies did you find most successful when promoting your blog?
I’ve found great success in promoting my blog posts through my Instagram Story. If you take advantage of the hashtag, it opens your story up to an entirely new audience who may not yet follow you. I would also suggest not shying away from Pinterest. I recently linked a blog post to a photo and received 7.5K new visits – from one pin!

How much time do you set aside weekly to realistically meet or exceed your specific writing standard?
I currently work a full-time job so I have to set time aside after hours to work on scheduled posts for the blog, If it’s something like a television recap that is meant to be snarky and purely just for entertainment purposes, I spend maybe an hour of my time drafting up the content, however, if it is a collaboration or sponsored post that needs to be approved, I almost always send out to an editor before hitting the submit button! So if we are deep in season, I might be spending 12-14 hours M-F, but it definitely varies depending on what type of post I am working on.

What is something that will always be in fashion, no matter how much time passes?
The go-go boot! I know they are one of the trickier trends out there, but the white boot has proven it has a decent lifespan every time it has made a comeback. Trust me on this.

What are some of the interesting foodie tips you have discovered while travelling?
Traveling with celiac disease can be tough depending on the destination so I’ve definitely had to get creative. Hydration is key as traveling can really do a number on your body and skin, so a water-bottle and sheet mask can always be found in my carry-on. The digestive system shuts down completely once you hit super-high altitudes, so the “healthy thing” to do is avoid eating on planes completely, but since I am known to get #hangry I try to pack a banana, avocado, or some type of allergy-friendly snack in my bag as well.

What are the necessary attributes one must possess in order to have a successful career in fashion?
Aside from the vanilla qualities – strong business sense, good communication skills, creativity, knowledge of the industry, visualization abilities – I would say you have to have thick skin and be motivated by competition as there will always be someone more successful with a larger following and bigger brands backing them. That passion and drive to find a competitive edge will get you far!

How much time should one invest into building traffic, promotion, marketing and SEO?
SEO is such a beast, but a crucial skill to master to see growth in your blog. I am constantly adjusting posts to boost mine so truthfully, it’s a never ending battle. It’s also important to get a sense of your audience and to drive traffic to your blog through cross platform promotion. I rely heavily on the Instagram Story and Pinterest when promoting a new blog post, but it’s definitely trial and error.

How does one reflect upon the past experiences of one’s blog in order to work out how to evolve it and build upon its strengths when moving forward?
I actually struggle with this myself and have ultimately come to the realization that it’s just a trial and error thing. Certain posts prove more successful than others, but I think it’s important to only take the analytics with a grain of salt. While they’re helpful to track performance, don’t let them dictate your content. Keep the passion alive by focusing on why you started blogging in the first place.

What formal or informal goals did you have for your blog when you started it?
I love this question because to be honest, I went in head first when I started Eye Hate Heels with not one goal in sight. I wrote a post a few years ago on my transition from pro-cheering to blogging, which I read quite often to remind myself of the wonderful opportunities that have come my way since. My advice when setting goals for yourself would be to never resign to the idea that this is your best and to remind yourself that there will always be so much more left to accomplish.

How did you develop your individual writing style and voice and what methods did you use to cultivate these skills?
The best writing advice I received was from my creative writing professor in college, which was to write as if you are speaking to one of your closest friends. I’ve definitely tried to weave that style throughout my blog – as if I’m texting one of my besties! Another skill I use is reading my work out loud when self-editing – to make sure it sounds human.

How do you turn daytime outfits into nighttime while on vacation without overpacking?
In my experience, exploring the nightlife of a new city tends to be more impromptu than the rest of the itinerary, and unless you’re traveling with more than a carry-on, there’s no need to do a total outfit change post-sunset. I rely on pieces to pull double-duty that can easily be transitioned from a daytime to evening look. Swap your day bag for a fun clutch – and stash a pair of statement earrings and a tube of red lipstick to swipe on once the sun goes down. Layers and biker or denim jackets are also highly suggested to complete your evening look!

How have you, or would you, deal with conflicts that emerge in a professional environment?
I like to nip issues in the bud immediately and am a big believer in going directly to the source rather than involving others. Listening and trying to see each other’s POV is also extremely paramount. Once the conflict has been identified, develop a plan to tackle the issue head on and build on your success together.

What was it like as a stylist, to have to constantly work with photographers, models, celebrities and designers?
Think “too many cooks in the kitchen” but wanting (and needing!) the opinion of every last one of those cooks.

What are your some of the hopes you have for your writing and what is your plan to make them a reality?
I have some really fun projects on the horizon, which I can’t quite speak on just yet, but definitely stay tuned as I’ve poured my whole heart and soul into them.

What are some of the techniques one can use to manage priorities and which of these do you prefer and why?
Take the time to create an editorial calendar. I find it hard to not become overwhelmed with deadlines and tend to get scatterbrained when the creative juices get flowing so a calendar really helps me streamline my content and brainstorm where and when to publish.

Why is black considered to be the epitome of chic and how would you describe your own personal style?
I struggle with this because I find black to be such a depressing color to wear, but I feel like because everyone has something black in their closet it’s an easy go-to – plus it’s definitely flattering on every body type. I’d describe my personal style as moody and eclectic. I dress for how I feel so for example if it’s raining outside and I’m past due for a blowout, I’ll 100% put on a black pair of cigarette pants, a top knot and an oversized Isabel Marant knit with a flat boot to feel as cozy and chic as possible.

What are your thoughts about key word research and why do you feel this way?
Keyword research is imperative to boosting your SEO. The key words and phrases are what make it possible for people to find your site via search engines so definitely take the time to research before hitting that submit button on your post! You can still have a fun, catchy title to your blog post, but be smart about how you formulate your permalink.

What is the weirdest, most unexpected skill you bring to your career, and how did you learn it?
Thanks to Google, I’m really good with a power drill. I did set design early in my career, which when I agreed to the position I thought I’d strictly be dressing the set, but I quickly learned the job consisted of physically building it as well.

What do you never leave home without and, in an ideal world, whom would you choose as the perfect travel companion?
I will always have my EpiPen, a tube of red lipstick, and a cheap (but comfortable) pair of bendable ballet flats with me at all times! If my dog counts as a travel companion, I’d choose her for sure, plus my mum since we are always on the same page. She’s also a great photographer and captures some epic outfit pics of me!

What are some of the mistakes you have made concerning blogging and what have you learnt from those mistakes?
My site randomly shutdown a month ago, which was a nightmare and a half so definitely keep up with your emails after hours! As far as blog posts, I always try to remind myself to be sensitive towards the readers when it comes to reporting on certain issues, but at the same time also keep true to the lighthearted voice of my blog.

Within the successive framework of your blog, do you identify yourself with the tremendous critical appraisal of it or have a thorough foresight of self – actualization to not denigrate the status of others to maintain commercial recognition?
I really strive to maintain my personal integrity as Eye Hate Heels grows, and have chosen to only work with sponsors who are aligned with my values. Being an animal lover, I’ve had to turn down some pretty incredible sponsorship opportunities because they use real fur.

In what ways can a person invest in his or her own learning as a blogger?
I’m a big believer in attending conventions for like-minded creatives. My favorite being StyleCon, which I spoke at last year. More info here! I also find online classes to be extremely beneficial as well.

What were the successes that you had for your blog that you did not set goals for?
If you told me years ago that Eye Hate Heels would be a multi-award winning blog or that I would be nominated for an International Best Dressed list, I definitely would have laughed it off, but it’s made these accomplishments all the more special!

Do you ever have days when writing is an effort and how do you handle it?
All.The.Time. I’ve found success in taking a beat by either watching a show (Friends is always a go-to for me!), scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest to gain some inspiration, or doing a quick workout.

What is the one thing that has annoyed you about certain hotels?
What’s with the minimum room service fee? Just last week, I had a craving and asked if I could pay the flat $25 for an order of fries and they shut me down. So lame!

How does your blog aim to help its readers?
I created Eye Hate Heels to document my favorite outfits, trends, and shows so if I can help a reader escape for five minutes a day through my blog, I’ve done my job.

What are some of the colour combinations that most appeal to your sense of style?
Everyone tends to shy away from yellow, but since my favorite color is mustard, I’m always trying to spice my outfits up with this shade. You can really make a statement by pairing it with a red lip!

Did you start by making clothes that you like, and in turn people liked your styles. or did you kind of go with the trends of each year and capitalize off of that?
I actually created a pretty successful tote bag line when I was in eighth grade (ha!), which spread by word of mouth on the beach where I grew up. I would sew them just for fun to match the prints to my bikinis and people wanted in! I ultimately chose my pre-teen social life over filling orders, but kick myself every day for that decision. As far as styling my outfits, I definitely base a lot off what is shown each season at fashion week, but only if the trend speaks to me and my brand.

What fashion trend have you most disliked and why?
I’m over all the overalls. I don’t find them flattering or practical whatsoever.

Who is your favorite designer?
I struggle between choosing Gucci and Miu Miu, so let’s call it a tie! Gucci recently dropped an entire collection solely focused dogs to celebrate the year of the dog which really tug on my heartstrings and at the same time, Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2018 show had me itching to purchase a pair of pink tights!
