Empire Records

For years, I’ve had Empire Records on my must-watch list seeing as most would consider it a cult classic so I finally got around to watching the film the other night. Aside from needing Liv Tyler’s outfit and confirming that Renée Zellweger has always looked like that, I had some mixed emotions.

The movie takes place over the span of a single day and is based around a record store (that may be sold to a bigger chain) which employs a tight-knit group of music-savvy misfits; think: a good girl, a slut, a goth, an artist, a wannabe, a stoner – Empire Records is basically The Breakfast Club, but set in a store instead of a high school.

Here’s the thing.. when Empire Records began filming in 1994, Kurt Cobain had just committed suicide, Marc Jacobs put grunge on the runway, and major record labels were tossing money at anything that might be the next Nirvana or Pearl Jam so I definitely enjoyed the aspect of nostalgia and was instantly thrown back to the days of shopping for a new CD – or VHS even! – with my high school crush.
