Strategies for Cold + Flu Season

I’m no stranger to bloating (hello, endo belly!), but I recently stumbled across an article linking gas, bloating, and abdominal pain to hard-to-digest sugars in over-the-counter meds.

Crazy, right?!

Also, before you read any further, quick reminder: I am definitely not a doctor.

As we enter cold and flu season and the clean medicine movement – a more natural approach to prevention and healing – gains traction, I wanted to share a few home remedies that I typically use before popping an OTC pill which (allegedly) can further depress the immune system – or begging my doctor for a Z-Pak..

Seriously, anything to keep a sinus infection and bloating at bay.

HYDRATION

How you treat your body in the first 24 hours of a viral infection is key.  As soon as symptoms surface, up your hydration to kick that bad boy out of your bod.  Big fan of peppermint tea, too.

SALINE SPRAY

This sounds silly, but a puff in each nostril in the morning and then again at night is part of my daily routine to clear congestion.  If you want to get a bit more aggressive, the neti-pot can also work wonders.

ESSENTIAL OILS

I was SO sick this past July and desperate to try anything, a friend suggested using steam and anti-inflammatory essential oils to loosen up blockages. Highly recommend eucalyptus and oregano to sooth your nasal cavities.

PREVENTION

D-d-d-defense is the ultimate prevention, which, duh.  To take extra precautions before being exposed to a bug, wash your hands, clean your devices, and live an overall healthy lifestyle – – i.e. sleep, exercise, clean eating, you know the drill.

Cheers to a happy, healthy winter!
