Like my period, I’m a day late, but happy belated International Women’s Day!
One of my favorite moments to circle back on during this time of year is the protest that took place outside the Dior fashion show in 1966.
What’s important to understand is during the 1960s, society was questioning traditional standards, and the feminist movement was in full swing. It was the “swinging sixties” afterall. While more and more designers were starting to incorporate shorter hemlines into their collections, Dior opted to exclude the mini skirt from theirs.
The mini skirt was more than just a trend. It was a fashion statement symbolizing female liberation.
A group of women known as the “British Society for the Protection of Mini Skirts” protested outside of the Dior fashion show that day, which clearly made waves as we are still discussing the protest and wearing the skirt.
Mini skirts forever.
