The Cast of Hamilton Shares Their Pre-Show Rituals

I think what I love most about musical theater is how it brings people together – sort of like fashion.

I grew up a theater kid.  Helping choreograph the middle school plays and volunteering at the local theater company’s costume department was a major part of my teenage life.  Still to this day, I live for a good Broadway show (remember this?!) as well as anything at the Kimmel or the Spring Lake theater.

When I was invited to see Hamilton at The Forrest Theater and meet the cast earlier this week, I obviously jumped at the opportunity.  The hype of this show isn’t even enough.  Hamilton is hands down the best thing I’ve experienced.  And seeing it once was definitely not enough.

Performing 8 shows weekly, the cast told me they each have their own individualized pre-show rituals.  Some meditate, others go to the gym (because you know, dancing three hours of choreo on a rotating stage each night isn’t enough), others just hit the stage to stretch – all drink a lots of coffee.

It was cool to hear their take on how they jump in and out of different characters each night.  Many are swings which in musical theater is code for a member of the company who understudies several chorus and/or dancing roles – aka a ton of pressure.

All female roles are contractually obligated to be on stage with a red lip, which if you ask me should be required in life as well – but that’s just me.
