Mary Austin & Freddie Mercury's Relationship Is The True Star of Bohemian Rhapsody

I was fortunate enough to see Bohemian Rhapsody on its opening night in LA last week. Aside from the reminder that Queen has a casual few dozen anthems and Freddie Mercury may be the most legendary, I found myself obsessed with the story of his and (ex-fiance) Mary Austin’s unconventional relationship turned ever-evolving friendship.

At the center of it all was a profound love and respect for each other, which was able to be the vehicle for everything else, for every avenue that their relationship took. Lucy Boynton (who plays Mary) explained that her main takeaway from the project was the understanding that if you do have that very solid and strong foundation, you don’t necessarily need to define your love or define your relationship. I found this to be so extremely refreshing – especially today as we are all so eager and impatient in every aspect of life.
