NYFW SS18: What We’ll See

NYFW SS18: What We'll See

As NYFW week kicks off this week, I wanted to place my predictions of the trends we’ll spy as the models stroll down the runway show by show. I’m writing this wearing my newfound favorite heels – yes, they were predicted to be a fall favorite, and alas – they are! Trend reporting is so funny to me because it’s not like we haveee to wear what is “in fashion” per se, but I truly do love incorporating said trend into my everyday look if the shoe fits. And in this case, it’s the kitten heel – and it’s amazing (especially for commuters such as myself!).

When fashion houses sit down to prepare their collections each season, they’re not only pulling inspiration from their insanely talented minds and intuition, but also from thousands of blogs, social media, images from previous shows, consumer behavior, and fashion archives. I still find it mind boggling how much goes into the color, fabric, and pattern choices – it’s an art. And when the final collections are presented, it’s magic.

Based on the Fall 2017 collections, change is in the air, which will continue into Spring 2018. We will continue to dress creatively in order to portray a sense of power and intelligence. I’m personally excited to see which unexpected vintage references the designers decide to showcase on the runways. As I mentioned in a previous post, nostalgia is VERY much en vogue right now – yay!

A few other key trends I’m hoping to see…

Whimsical, occasion dressing with feminine silhouettes and florals. Think; pale pinks and pastels with silk chiffons and ruffled blouses.

Modern shapes created with architectural precision. Asymmetry is key here (have a feeling we’ll be seeing a LOT of this). And lots of stripes, polka dots, and elongated skirts.

Gucci has been killing it lately, so I’m hoping for more designers to come out strong with references to a variety of eras. History provides the best inspirations, no? Bright yellows, reds, oranges, and vibrant pinks mixed with hand-drawn images and architectural references with tulle, sequins, and glitter.
