Last night’s Met Gala was one for the books. The theme – Punk: Chaos to Couture – challenged stylists to take red carpet looks to the next level. And they delivered. I really hope I wasn’t the only one drooling over my computer screen during Vogue.com‘s live-stream.

Since ‘punk’ is such an open-ended genre, there’s a lot of room for interpretation. Want to go punk for a night and don’t have access to a celeb stylist? Since pink is the color of punk, start with a dress in a similar shade and add layers and layers of jewelry. Punk has a DIY attitude a la safety pins, chains, deconstruction, and graffiti. According to Marc Jacobs, the punk era stemmed from thrift shops in NYC. Super cool and so chic.

Anyway, enough with the history lesson. Here’s my take on last night’s best dressed and who should’ve stayed at home (I’m looking at you Anne Hathaway).

Special Shout-outs:

Rooney Mara, co-chair of the gala, wore Givenchy and a vampy lip, which I LOVED. While Amanda Seyfried (the new face of Givenchy) kept it more vintage than punk in one of the fashion house’s classic pieces.

Since Kim Kardashian and Anna Wintour were matching, I guess the rumors are true that Kimye dined at the Devil Wears Prada’s house the night prior.

SJP’s custom-made Louboutin boots were everything. She literally could have shown up naked and still topped the charts for best dressed in those suckers.

Can’t forget to mention the men. While most stuck to a navy suit with some quirky accessories (shout-out to the dude with the skull embroidered pocket square) all oozed the punk attitude. Sexual, dark and rebellious.

After last night, how do we feel about punk? Chains and graffiti are nothing without the confidence to pull it off. Much like dying your hair blonde doesn’t make you fun if you’re inherently not – another shot at Anne Hathaway, I’m done.
