Rule of Thumb

Meghan Lorine

In honor of Throwback Thursday, I was reminiscing about high school dress codes and how often style was mistakenly associated with a shorter hemline. My alma mater used the “rule of thumb” to determine whether an outfit was appropriate or not. Those of us with hemlines above our thumbs were usually sent home to change.

Whether we’re ready for it or not, the nice weather means showing off some more skin. Shorts are a must-have for the summer – and I especially love dressing them up with a tailored jacket – but let’s establish some ground rules to minimize the risk of camel toe (PLEASE).

Here are some tips if you want to avoid being labeled a ‘streetwalker’ by E!’s Fashion Police:

  1. For the daytime, follow the rule of thumb – literally. You don’t want to be labeled the office slut, and you definitely don’t want to be ogled by your coworkers.
  2. Balance short shorts with long sleeved blouses.
  3. Throw on a pair of heels to lengthen legs.
