The Bold Type

Here’s the thing. I wish we lived in a world where hot men returning texts in a timely fashion was a given and coffee breaks and lunch breaks were guaranteed and girls supporting girls was the norm, but it’s not. This is why Freeform’s The Bold Type is everything millennial women need on their TVs this summer.

Inspired by the life of Cosmopolitan editor in chief, Joanna Coles, The Bold Type is a glimpse into the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for a global women’s magazine. Their struggles are about finding your identity, managing friendships and getting your heart broken, all while wearing the perfect jeans to flatter any body type.

Despite the prevalent image of millennials as entitled and not willing to work, the show’s three protagonists live for and agonize over their jobs. Whether it be impressing a new boss, dealing with online trolls, stalking an ex for a story, or being conflicted in a professional career path, the show’s issues are exceedingly relatable – and rare for a television series (these days).

When people find out I run a fashion blog, I almost instantaneously feel judged. The death stare of the “of course, the younger generation only cares about being Insta-famous for what they’re wearing and who they’re dating” – what they fall short of realizing is that I’ve built friendships from connecting and collaborating with like-minded individuals and am proud that I’ve figured out a nice work/life balance in my ever-expanding career (if that’s what you want to even call it).

The friendship between the girls on The Bold Type is a genuine portrayal of the younger generation. Albeit, me and my friend’s sanctuary is typically in the bathroom rather than in a magazine’s fashion closet; both have the same magical aesthetic – they’re a place where conversations are confidential and women are empowering other women to take risks in their careers, writing and/or love lives.

The show is hilariously self-aware and such an addictive and progressive series, so I highly recommend you guys give it a watch!
